Yes, God Cares How You Vote

As a general rule, I try to stay out of politics.  As a pastor, I have never felt that I should use my position to advocate for one politician or party over another.  However, I do have a responsibility to advocate for Christian ethics and morality.  I have a responsibility to stand for the victimized …

Fantastic Four

Do people invite themselves to your home?  I was encouraged by this because just this weekend, Angela and I invited ourselves to the new home of some friends. Tim Challies examines the inconvenience of being inconvenienced. Do people feel they can come to your home only for formal Bible studies or can they come to …

No Creed But Christ

My favorite T-Shirt has a picture of Charles Spurgeon on the back with this quote: I am never ashamed to avow my self a Calvinist; do not hesitate to take the name of Baptist; but if I am asked what is my creed, I reply, ‘It is Jesus Christ.’ Somewhere along the way, it seems …

Apparently, Bill Nye “The Science Guy” thinks creationism is bad and should not be taught to kids.  It is interesting to learn that Nye believes evolution (a non-entity) to solve problems in the world. “Your world becomes fantastically complicated if you don’t believe in evolution,” Nye said in the Web video. Tim Challies offers a …

In, Miracles, C.S. Lewis rejects the notion that scientific progress and discovery has nullified the belief in miracles. The idea that progress of science has somehow altered this question is closely bound up with the idea that people ‘in olden times’ believe in them [miracles] ‘because they didn’t know they laws of nature.’  Thus, you …

Don’t Pray About That

Yesterday I wrote about how prayer is sometimes not enough.  If you thought I was a heretic then, you will certainly be disappointed to hear a pastor say that some things in this world should not be prayed about.  By saying that, I’m not suggesting as some have done that some things are too small …

When Prayer Isn’t Enough

I know, to some of you I sound like a heretic for suggesting that prayer may not be enough in your situation.  However, I am convinced that prayer is often not enough. Prayer is indeed a powerful experience and we are confident as believers in Jesus that God responds to the prayers of his people (2 Chron. 7:14; James 5:16).  We should be constantly in prayer (1 Thess. 5:17).  Nevertheless, prayer is not the only thing that God has called us to as Christians, and in many situations of life, though prayer is necessary, it alone is not sufficient.  Here are three types of situations where prayer is not enough.

1. When God has already provided an answer.  I’m reminded of the story of a man caught in a flood. The police came to warn him to evacuate and he replied, “God will rescue me.”  When the water began coming into the house, he moved to the second story and a boat came by attempting to save him and he proudly proclaimed, “My God will rescue me.”  When a helicopter appeared to save him from the roof of his house, he answered, “God will rescue me.”  After drowning, he stood before God confused, “why didn’t you save me?”  God replied, “I sent you a car, a boat, and a helicopter, what more could you want?”

We should certainly welcome the fact that the silicon chip will transcend human brain-power, as the machine has transcended human muscle-power.  Much less welcome will be the probable reduction of human contact as the new electronic network renders personal relationships ever less necessary.  In such a dehumanized society the fellowship of the local church will …

Book Review: Turning to God

The nature and question of true conversion is a hot topic in the church today. At the Southern Baptist Convention this year, David Platt found himself in a bit of hot water by questioning the validity of the “sinner’s prayer.”  The debate there hinges on the exact usefulness of a canned prayer to bring about …
